The Truth About Aircraft Maintenance
The truth is your aircraft requires maintenance regardless of how much it flies. Unfortunately, maintenance is often the most expensive and misunderstood aspect of ownership. All aircraft must comply with scheduled inspections such as annuals, phases, or letter checks. They must also comply with the replacement of life-limited parts such as landing gear assemblies, engine components, and safety equipment. Of course, some aircraft require unscheduled maintenance such as troubleshooting, component replacements, and servicing. In other words, maintenance is an inevitable part of aircraft ownership.
For most, aircraft maintenance is overwhelmingly mind numbing. It can be both complex as well as convoluted. Some maintenance is only performed on condition, while in other cases, it is accomplished on a specific schedule such as hourly, by calendar date or by cycles. Likewise, some maintenance events are required by regulation while others are mere recommendations. Knowing what maintenance to complete and when, is vital to keeping your aircraft safe, compliant, and airworthy.
The next hurdle to overcome is finding a qualified, capable, and competent maintenance provider to perform maintenance on your aircraft. Some maintenance providers are certified by the FAA as a Repair Station under FAR Part 145, while others operate under the less restrictive FAR Part 43. How do you know which shops you can trust and which ones to run away from?
Another hard truth to accept is that many maintenance providers are trying to rip you off. Why? Because maintenance shops are in the business of maintenance, which means they only make money when your airplane is parked their hangar. This fact can quickly create a conflict of interest between you and the shop because your objective is to keep your airplane safe without overpaying for unnecessary maintenance. Many shops are not honest about their hourly rates, billable time, or the cost of parts. Many have deceptive billing practices where they add “fake” billable hours to their work orders along with bogus fees and phony upcharges.
Many shops add parts to your invoice that weren’t even installed in the aircraft or add ridiculous markups to already expensive parts. Many owners suffer from sticker shock following maintenance events because the shop performed superfluous work that you did not approve. Many shops try to justify performing unneeded work by using buzz words like mandatory, required, or airworthy simply to scare you into doing work that may not even be required or advisable. There are shops that play games such as lying about when they will have your aircraft ready to fly again or simply don’t communicate with you at all. In other words, many shops lack integrity, transparency, and personal service.
